JSDC
Entry: CU@USC Interview

I was a little worried at the start, when Jess had to ask, "Do you have a question or do you want me to just dive right in?" Usually with shows like "Today," the host provides the guest with the questions in advance so the guest can prepare. Matt Laurer then springs a couple of surprise questions on the guest, but mostly he/she can prepare.

Favorite moments:

1. The Little Mermaid reference. I took a Children's Lit class as an undergrad, and I know how morbid and violent those fairy tales really are. The tounge being cut out in that story is great!

2. "It is a $100,000 film and we've raised $40,000". I don't think we've ever gotten those details before.

3. "If you're working at a professional level without a marketing budget you're screwed."

4. "Everyone's Hungry Hungry Hippos; we want our share, we want our share!"

5. "More people doing less".

These are the same comments I posted to the Facebook group, but since most people probably either haven't joined the group yet or are checking it everyday, I thought I'd cross-post them here, too.

Ok - Jessica, emails from two different addresses of mine were apparently rejected by your mail server. Looks like your mail server doesn't trust "my" mail server. I say "my" because the server belongs to a huge webhost (and isn't being run out of my living room), so I can't imagine why yours doesn't not trust it. I won't post the error that was returned here because it has IP addresses and what-not in it.

Maybe you have some hotmail or gmail account...or IM? (or can create one really fast?)

I'm getting your emails, so you can just send it my way.

Sorry for the misuse of your "comments" section.

Please remind me, when is it that an IMDB entry would appear for AE? Perhaps if we can point people to an IMDB page for the film it would seem more "real" to them (although your movie site for AE is so professional and slick it should really be doing the trick). Maybe for some people a movie isn't really a movie unless it is on IMDB. Just a suggestion. Feel free to ignore. wink

It's on the map. IMDB has rules about when you can submit, and there is a point where I will need to do all of that myself so that the information is correct. That's why I added it to the map: So that people wouldn't attempt to create the IMDB page early. (And because I knew people would be asking this question.) wink

A better idea would be to send the links to Current TV and some of the other alternative outlets we discussed in the interview.

Chris - If other sites on your host are spamming people and so forth then that could be the cause. I had that problem with an older provider. You should take it up with them. I will try you on a different account.

Jess,

You rocked! I'm so proud of you and I hope this TV appearance brings in some funds so you can make your awesome film.

I missed the first several minutes last night, so I'm glad to see the vids on here. smile

I'm also glad that the interviewer gave you the chance to answer fully instead of cutting you off like I've seen in so many other interviews.

I think these videos should be the second stop for anyone interested in AE (after the site, of course). It's a cogent, interesting way of presenting Jess's ideas; and actually watching an interview makes it that much more personal.

Great job to all involved.

Well thanks for watching, everyone. So I did the interview, and, just like it says in part 03: Nothing happened. No one saw it.

So no spike in traffic as a result of the interview, or a spike in traffic but no additional donations as a result of the interview?

Either scenario sucks equally, I guess.

No improvement in any regard.

I think people need a good ol' clout in the ear. No vision. It's aggravating for me, so I can only imagine how it is for Jess and the AAE team.

What is immensely frustrating to me is my inability to get my friends to donate even $1. I think there are only 2 people on the list I'm directly responsible for, and I've sent e-mails and requests to over 100 people and blogged about it fairly regularly.

Welcome to my world, wink.

That's about right though: 3% of traffic actually does something. So it's just a matter of getting eyeballs over the site so that it reaches the right people, not convincing people who don't get it or aren't into it.

You know what we need? Charles Xavier and Cerebro. Then we could just find all the people who have the right mindset and contact only them.
My strategy is awesome.

We need a wingman to win the lottery, but baring that eventuality we need to keep pushing the Facebook group on our friends, we (the readers of JSDC) need to contact our "friends" on all these social networking sites, we need to contact friends and family, we need to continue to blog about it, and we need to continue to donate as best as we can.

$60k is a long way left to go.

Submitting to higher profile blogs/press (where it makes sense) and other gatekeepers is better than harassing your same old friends. Maybe you guys could make a list of ideas/work together. (Woo for togetherness.) People are into what we're doing, it's really just a matter of reaching them/having enough traffic come through. Still under 3500 unique users have seen the site. That's like nothing. About 3% of traffic donates. Which is actually pretty decent-impressive % wise.

Time spent convincing one person who has already seen it is a waste.
Time spent convincing someone who has access to thousands of people (an editor, etc.) is more useful.

You know?

Good point, good point. I still believe that those same old friends should pony the frack up, however, and it is annoying that out of 100 e-mails I cannot generate $1,000 worth of donations.

We do need to get organized, however. Maybe that is a good use of the Facebook page.

You should totally call up that host and ask why she hasn't donated yet!

I can tell you why:

People always think they are exempt. Like things don't apply to them.

I'm trying to think of (pitch-able) ways that this project differs from other web fundraising projects.

And yes, please use le Facebook. What's the list of places you have reached out to? Up to you guys to organize. I would seriously offer mad props to anyone who could get us Slashdot-ed in a meaningful way.
