You're forgetting the inherent zipline/swinging-on-a-branch capabilities of a crook which place it high above the walking stick in the ambulatory aid heirarchy.

I grew up on a small tax shelter...I mean sheep farm...but we only had 10 sheep and 3 goats. Not enough to need a crook. And they were pretty tame. I just sort of pushed them in the direction I needed them to go. Or bribed them with sheep feed. I did get trampled by them once - they got spooked and I was holding a gate closed and they bum rushed me and knocked the gate open and me down and ran over me to freedom. I still have a small scar on my shoulder where one stepped on me.
Anyway, not sure that qualifies as professional shepherd or not, but regardless I neither had nor have a crook.
And I think the mocking jargon for shepherds with too-tall crooks is "over compensating".  |
